colophon

Read books? You may have seen a colophon, the funny page in back that tells the typographic geeks what font the book was printed in, and where.

The production of web pages is somewhat more complicated than books, so the geeks are somewhat more geeky and the process somewhat more interesting. Some web publishers (antipixel, for instance) have begun including this little throwback to the paper age. Seems like a good idea to me.

design

these pages are constructed with css and XHXML 1.0. i think it all validates, suprisingly enough.

you should not have problems viewing the page if you come equipped with a reasonable web browser, or failing that, with internet explorer. you should try mozilla firefox. really.

helpful hints on css have come from Mr. Zeldman, a list apart, and more recently, the css discuss wiki.

images

photos are taken with a nikon coolpix 2500 (david) and a canon S200 (jeremy). we recommend them both, if you can find them.

image editing is performed mainly on the gimp, a free but very powerful image editing program, available for both linux (macOS 10) and windows.

coding

the site is developed, and runs, on free (free as in libre, and as in beer), open-source software. software involved in the creation of templates principally includes Quanta Plus, Kate, and The Gimp (2.0).

the weblog backend is powered by nucleus. i have made quite a few modifications, notably:

  • some dual-language modifications to the php (using cookies to store language preference)
  • more code modifications to include next/previous titles (before you have…), a la fireland
  • my image slideshow plugin
  • the FancyText plugin, adopted to use the very fancy texturize code by photo matt

contact me if you want to know specifics.

we’re served very happily by , on linux servers running apache, mysql, and php.
