3-day weekend

the protest on Friday was huge but peaceful. there were more people than i'd ever raised a banner with, in english or in spanish. luckily i ran into jeremy on accident, because even if i could have slowly worked my way out of the crowd i wouldn't have made it to a payphone and back before the protest ended.

last night jeremy and i saw la traviata, the verdi opera, in an old boxing stadium (it was also where the world basketball championships were held, in 1950 and 1990). we had dinner at midnight and talked politics until 4. we thought about going out afterwards but gave up and i went home.

today at the supermarket, a bald, older man behind me in the express line had one of those fancy hairdriers with an attachment for the front, a comb-thing, you know. the box said 'extra body'. i wanted to tell him it was no use.

i bought a bottle of something that looked like champagne but turned out to be, i think, sparkling cider. i drank a bit with my dinner, but it was yucky. it was also sixty cents.

tonight when i walked to the internet cafe after midnight, the cafes were still open. mcdonald's too, and flower and newspaper stands on the street. apartment doormen were yawning and a guy was sweeping out an entire parking garage.

right now, 2:11am, the computer lab is nearly full; three people near me are internet-chatting and the fourth is downloading and watching madonna videos. guess it's time to go home.

previously there was wake-up call
afterwards you have Christmas explosions
