Cow Tools

The dollar was up slightly on Saturday, so I figured I’d head over to the bank and withdraw a little bit of money. Everything went as planned until, an hour or so later, something possessed me to open my wallet and I realized I’d left my ATM card in the machine.

Drrg.

In a controlled panic, I headed back to the bank. There, behind the locked sliding door, I saw my ATM card face-down on the floor. Relief.

Then frustration: The bank wasn’t scheduled to open until Monday morning. I realized I could leave a note for the bank and come back then, but that seemed like leaving too much to chance (what if the person who opened the door just left the card there?). And I wanted to check on my account to see if any more money had been withdrawn, which I could easily do online if I had the card number.

So back to my apartment I went to assemble a card removal toolkit:

I ended up using every one of these tools (all right, I only used one of the pencils). Any guesses which was ultimately successful? A second fork was unfortunately lost in action, and will be there to greet whoever opens the door on Monday morning. If anybody gets curious about the fork, the security camera should have some entertaining footage.

Pretty good Jeremy! My 9th grade friend just gave me an intro to lock picking--apparently it could be handy! [submitted on 27 Jan 03]

A good quartermaster would have had just what you needed - the Official US Army (available for loan to the UN) Extendo Sticky-Arm, used to retract keys dropped in small crevices in tanks and the like. Next time just give me a ring. [submitted on 28 Jan 03]

well, this was the bolted door of the inner bank. I don't think I could have gotten in without setting off an alarm or two. [submitted on 25 Feb 03]
