barbie goes global

I love it. At Barbie.com, you (our your son or daughter, if you like), can play "happy family games", decorate your computer, be phone friends with Barbie, and of course SHOP with Barbie.

I bring this up because the darling little girl sitting on her mother's lap, next to me in this internet cafe in Buenos Aires, is navigating the Barbie web as we speak. Mom made her type in the address ("look what you've got, honey: barbi.comm") but now mom is translating the page out loud from English. Mom doesn't realize, I guess, that Barbie is now available directly in Spanish (and Italian, German, Swedish, Portuguese, Dutch, British...).

I'd navigated the Barbie web myself, a few months ago, with a 5-year-old from Philadelphia named Meghan:

This time I investigated the international slant a bit further, and found that Barbie isn't as international as you'd think. The American Barbie is quite American, sporting some casual blue pants (below left), but there is only one Barbie for all the rest of the countries. She's blonde, of course (even the Latina Barbie), and she's got this hideous pink dress on.

I know they make darker Barbies (or at least ones who aren't blonde), so what's up with the photos, Mattel? Not all posh princesses are blonde. Some of them don't even want to be.

previously there was Cow Tools
afterwards you have Diccionario

they should learn from McDonald's, who serves lomo sandwiches here in Buenos Aires and vegetarian fare in India (or so I hear). [submitted on 28 Jan 03]

I periodically check your website and just wanted to say hello and greetings from Philly. Hope all is well with you and hope you are adjusting to life in your new country. Reading your comments about Barbie and then seeing you with Meghan made me want to get in touch with you. Hope to hear from you soon. [submitted on 29 Jan 03]

we have our own princess, maxima zorreguieta, a very posh girl from a posh neighbourhood (san isidro) married to the prince of holland (february 2002). cinderella's dream came true, though her parents could not attend the wedding 'cause they were involved in some ministery during the 70's (dictatorship) and she was asked to appear on t.v supporting democracy. to make up for her father's absence she asked some musicians to play (at the cathedral) a well known tango from piazzolla called "adios nonino". (a masterpiece he composed after his father died). the wedding was a whole subject for a couple of months, as i told you before about our short term memory, immediately after the incidents on december 20th and our five presidents we wondered whether we would be able to watch maxima's wedding on tv. besos y abrazos.
