here at last!

shortly after we boarded our United airplane at JFK, a small section of the cabin wall came loose - the molding above an overhead compartment. maintenance came on and, rather than re-attaching the piece, ripped the panel off. Our head flight attendant then got on the PA and, amongst his discussion of seat belt etiquette, gave a relatively emotional statement of appreciation - thanks for riding United in this time of trouble. I gathered from conversations among the other passengers that the company has been in the news lately for its poor financial discussion (see "United Air's Family Is Anything But" in the October 7 New York Times, Business section).
But the plane took off and landed just like it was supposed to, and we arrived safe, sound, and slightly early in Buenos Aires this morning. Contrary to the reports we received en route of temperatures in the teens, it was 24 degrees out (nobody has bothered to convert to Farenheit, even on the airplane... 24 * 1.8 + 32 = 75.2 F), with blue skies, so I may have to wait another 6 months to wear the jacket I bought here in May.
Our friend met us at the airport and escorted us to the Hotel Bolivar, where we're each paying under four dollars a night. Our room has mysterious outlets (unlike anything in the nearby hardware store) and differently sized beds (we'll arm wrestle over them), but it seems safe. And it has a bidet! I'm not sure if bidets are considered fancy or not in Argentina, but the one in Crocodile Dundee was in a five-star hotel, right?
After our friend left us to study, David and I have been exploring the neighborhood of San Telmo. FYI, the ATMs work just fine (though I had to wait in a couple lines) and exchanging money seems to be no problem.
and now - off to my nap!
