My Spanish teacher came into class on time today, which I gather is almost unprecendented, and announced that there was a "piqueno problema." Apparently the University of Buenos Aires has been paying its teachers only half their salaries for several months, so today the teachers decided to start teaching only half their classes. So far, they say, it´s just for today. We´ll see what happens on Monday.
The class costs only 360 pesos for 8 weeks (8 hours each week). That´s 100 dollars (although we´re trying to think in pesos). It´s not an enormous monetary loss, but the dollar is tanking, and we are less rich each day. According to ClarÃn, the exchange rate was 3.80 pesos to the dollar at the beginning of October, and is 3.60 and dropping now. I gather this is the result of actions taken by the Argentine central bank to weaken the dollar here, but that´s about all I can understand of the Spanish economics articles.
But we are getting our footing! When I signed up for my Spanish class, I was given a detailed form to fill out with personal information. I had nothing to write down but my name, JeremÃas. No phone number, no address.
But now - I have found an apartment!! And a phone, too. More on the apt next week when I move in. David continues his search for a place, but he has leads.
