apartment J

My new apartment is on Avenida Cabildo, the main thoroughfare through the Belgrano neighborhood. Belgrano, about a half hour subway trip from downtown, seems upper-middle-class and very quiet. The streets are still occupied at night and everything feels very safe. But the nightlife is quiet, too; in a few nights' exploration i have yet to find a proper bar, only restaurants and cafes open late.

These streets are a comfortable home during the day. I have a DISCO supermarket around the corner, internet cafes on every block open all hours, and a produce shop almost directly below me.

My apartment is huge. I have two bedrooms, a living room and dining room, a kitchen, and 5 beds somehow (one in the dining room). Jeremy is staying here (and Kate too, tomorrow) until he moves into his own place downtown. Some photos:

The kitchen. The machine on the wall is an on-demand water heater that fires up each time we run hot water for the shower and the kitchen sink.

Besides yesterday's mess with the washing machine, the stove also tried to attack Jeremy last night with a jet of flame. These attacks, and the mysterious disappearance of a head of garlic and the kitchen sponge, have helped confirm our suspicion that the apartment is probably haunted. Worse than haunting, we discovered the third day here, is construction. Each morning at about 9 construction begins on an ajoining apartment building. The jackhammers, saws, sledgehammers, etc. seem well designed to make us feel like the apartment is under seige. You can see a short video of the sledgehammering (coming later, sorry...) When you watch it imagine the walls and floor shaking.

In a month I move again, to the apartment I originally rented. (Maybe the construction here will be done by then.) My landlord's daughter is temporarily in the nicer apartment, so when she escapes this city for Spain I will relocate to Recoleta, closer to town. For now this quiet suburb/city is a fine home.

Please say hello to Jeremy for me. I have visited Buenos Aires many times on my way to do research in Corrientes, and really like the city. Of course, I just spent a few days each time. I hope you find your time there to be meaningful and rewarding. [enviado el 16 Nov 02]
